📖 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!”Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”They were terrified and asked one another, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” - Mark 4:39–41
This passage tells a very interesting episode from the Gospel. Jesus was in a boat with His disciples, crossing the Sea of Galilee toward the other side of the shore. Other boats were following them. It is quite likely that Jesus was tired, because He lay down with a cushion and fell asleep right there in the stern. Suddenly, a great storm arose, with strong winds and large waves that threatened to flood the boat they were in, as well as the other boats following them.
The disciples were desperate! Even though they knew how to handle boats, this situation was beyond them. They feared the worst. In the midst of their distress, they may have thought, “How is it possible that He can sleep in the middle of such a storm?” The answer is simple: Jesus had control over everything, even over what caused fear in His friends. They cried out to the Master to calm the storm—and He did.
Trust in the sovereign control of Jesus
Believe that Jesus is all-powerful. His power surpasses the forces of nature and every power in this world.
Surrender control of your life to the Lord Jesus Christ. He alone can care for you and give you eternal security.
Do not be afraid of adverse circumstances when Jesus is in control of your life.
Seek Jesus when you find yourself in the storms of life. Trust that the boat will not sink because He is present.
Cry out to God; He has dominion and power over the entire universe. He will bring peace to your heart.
Share the Gospel of the grace of Jesus Christ with others. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Prayer: Lord my God, thank You for teaching me to trust in You. Nothing can contain Your strength, and nothing compares to Your power. I don’t know how it is possible that I sometimes feel afraid in the midst of circumstances, knowing that You are always with me. Help me to believe in You. I will cry out for Your help when everything seems lost and when my heart feels troubled. Calm the storm, Lord. Help me to sense Your peace and to trust that You are in control of all things. In the name of Jesus, amen. 🙏
