Seeing is Believing

There is a popular saying that many associate with the story of the apostle Thomas and Jesus. The saying is “seeing is believing,” or, in other words, “if I don’t see it, I won’t believe it.” Consider the following passage from John 20:

Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said,

“Peace be with you!”

Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

With Jesus, the logic is reversed: believing is the first step toward seeing the impossible happen. To believe is to trust, to have confidence, and to have faith.

There are many things that can shake our faith: lies, discouragement, distrust, sadness, or prejudice. When we need to “see to believe,” it can be a warning sign. God will not stop performing miracles and wonders; He is merciful. But when we depend on what our natural eyes can see, we limit ourselves spiritually. When we remain stuck in that stage, we stop moving forward and miss the extraordinary things God wants us to experience.

So nourish your faith. Read and listen to the Word of God. It opens our spiritual eyes and helps us believe in the impossible through Jesus.

Believe and You Will see

• Read or listen to the Word of God regularly. Faith comes by hearing!

• Be bold and ask, but begin thanking God even before you see the answer.

• If something doesn’t happen, keep believing. Perseverance is an exercise of faith.

Prayer: Lord, many times I keep my eyes fixed on the ground. Today I want to do things differently. I want to look to You and thank You for what You have already done and for what You will do in my life. I believe, and I know that I will see it at the right time. I will keep moving forward with eyes of faith. Amen. 🙏
