📖 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” (Luke 11:1)

How should we pray correctly? This is a legitimate question for many people. Although prayer is central to the Christian’s relationship with the Lord, many disciples do not know how to do it. But something wonderful we discover in this verse is that it is possible to learn to pray with Christ.

Jesus prayed constantly. The disciples saw that he was always speaking with the heavenly Father, and this awakened in them the desire to learn to pray as well. In those times, it was common for Jewish teachers and rabbis to teach prayers to their disciples, just as John the Baptist had taught his.

However, Jesus is our greatest model of dependence, love, communion, and submission in prayer. You will only learn to pray correctly if you learn from Jesus, making him your greatest personal example in prayer.

Ask God to teach you how to pray

  • Spend more time in prayer and desire to learn from Jesus all the gifts available to God’s people.

  • Jesus had already taught how to pray in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 6:9–13), but with tenderness and kindness, he taught again the simplicity of praying the Lord’s Prayer.

  • Our prayers will be acceptable to God if we learn them from Him.

  • Do as Jesus did: live a life of constant prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

To pray: Our Father who is in heaven, teach me to pray. Help me to be more like the Lord Jesus Christ, to seek you with all the love and reverence that he has shown. Teach me to open my heart in prayer always while your Word guides us. Teach me to trust in you and to forgive those who hurt me. Stay with me, Father, and may your name be glorified, now and forever! Amen. 🙏
